"Cyclops" baby born with only one eye, no nose
A baby was born with one eye in the middle of his forehead is not expected to survive more than a few days.
Doctors believe the newborn boy is suffering from cyclopia - an unusual medical condition named after the one-eyed giants of Greek mythology - caused by radiation exposure in the womb.
The baby boy was born at a private hospital in El Senbellawein in Egypt with only one eye in the middle of his forehead and no nose. He is suffering from a rare congenital disorder called cyclopia. Cyclopia is one of the rarest forms of birth defects and children born with this condition often die shortly after birth.
In Alex Watt's October 6, 2015 report posted on Unilad, Watt said the cyclopic baby's single eye and missing nose is the result of the eye socket not developing properly in the womb.
Cyclopia in human babies may occur as often as 4 times in 1,000 births, but the pregnancy usually does not go full term or the babies are stillborn upon delivery. The condition is more commonly seen in animals.
The Egyptian baby was born with other deformities in his body, according to Dr. Ahmed Badruddin who is supervising the baby's condition at the hospital.
Badruddin said the baby has large ears, a head full of hair and many other deformities; adding that babies born with this condition also suffer from heart defects.
According to reports from the Saudi Arabian news website slaati.com, doctors think the deformity could be the result of a combinations of different medicines taken by the mother during the pregnancy or it may be the result of a radiation exposure.
The image of the cyclopic baby boy was released and shared by members of his family, who are reportedly receiving counseling.
The condition has been named cyclopia after the mythical race of lawless giant shepherds who lived in Sicily which had a single large round eye in the centre of their forehead.
Another story of "cyclopia" was featured in GMA 7's Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho which was aired on June 25, 2017. Pahmia and Omran's baby was born with only one eye, and with the same faith as the other "cyclops babies", sadly the little one didn't survive even an hour after delivery.
