PSY's "Gangnam Style" broke YouTube's view counter

The Gangnam Style music video has been seen so many times that YouTube has had to change the way it counts views.

YouTube said the video - it's most watched ever - has been viewed more than 2,147,483,647 times.

According to Google, who own YouTube, they never though a video would be watched in numbers greater than a 32-bit integer, but that was before they met Psy. Gangnam Style has been viewed so many times that YouTube have to upgrade!

When programmers built YouTube nine years ago, they probably never imagined that a video on the young platform -- back when several million views was considered a smash hit -- might be watched more than 2.1 billion times.

As a result of Gangnam's astronomical success, YouTube has had to upgrade to a 64-bit integer. What this means is that you could now, theoretically, view a YouTube video more than nine quintillion times. That’s 9,223,372,036,854,775,808 to be precise.

Still, it's an impressive feat for PSY's trademark horse-riding dance video, which is almost 2½ years old. Uploaded in July 2012, "Gangnam Style" was the first clip to hit a billion views and is the most-watched video of all time. It was even the No. 5 most-played video on YouTube this past summer, McLernon said.

The second most-watched video on YouTube - Baby by Justin Bieber - lags behind Gangnam Style by more than a billion views.
