Earwax is necessary to clean, lubricate and protect the lining of the ear from dirt and water. But an excessive amount can lead to problems – as one man discovered when a huge lump was pulled from his ear in a video posted online.
Earwax is produced by glands in the ear canal. Although scientists are still not completely sure why we have earwax, its purpose is to trap dust and other small particles and prevent them from reaching, and potentially damaging or infecting the eardrum.
Normally, the wax dries up and falls out of the ear, along with any trapped dust or debris. Everyone makes ear wax, but the amount and type are genetically determined just like hair color or height.
Smaller or oddly shaped ear canals may make it difficult for the naturally occurring wax to get out of the canal and lead to wax impactions.
This disgusting video of a man having a huge lump of earwax pulled from his ear canal by a woman with tweezers has been viewed 212,363 times by people sharing his relief at finally being able to hear again.
Posted by Kyle Davis, the footage shows a man sitting down while a woman holds his ear open with her hands.
Using a pair of tweezers, the woman begins tugging at a piece of earwax sticking out of his ear.
She has a few attempts at trying to pull it free, but fails on three separate occasions to get a good enough grip.
On the fourth go however she manages to get a grasp of it and removes a piece of wax the size of a small candle from the ear.
She then recoils as the other people in the room scream in disgust.
One man even comments that the video will be going up on YouTube.
The woman had three attempts at grasping the piece of earwax before pulling it free on the fourth try.
According to the NHS,ear wax does not normally cause problems, but too much can lead to a blocked and painful ear or hearing loss.
This is otherwise known as impacted earwax.
Treatment options for this include specially prescribed ear drops or, if they do not work, ear irrigation.
Since appearing online on YouTube and Reddit, the video has received a number of comments. YouTube user Victoria C (Life of Vi) wrote: "Why does everyone start screaming?!
"This poor bugger's just got the hearing back in his ear, and everyone's trying to deafen him."
Some viewers shared they guy's relief at finally being able to hear again, saying:
While others were fascinated to watch the ever bigger lumps being removed, with WiseauIsLife saying: "That was freaky yet oddly satisfying at the same time."
While Reddit user EnigmaNL questioned how his ears had got so bad, commenting: "How does this even happen?
"Did nobody ever clean his ears since he was born?"
