Are the telcos ready for the surge of holiday calls, texts and data?
This holiday season, will the local telcos can handle the volume of SMS, call and data surge?
The National Telecommunication Commission (NTC) said that the telcos should undertake necessary network adjustment and maintenance to ensure that their networks are ready to accommodate the expected increase in traffic during the holiday season. Sufficient operation and maintenance personnel should be deployed to have a 99.999% availability and reliability on their network, as indicated in a Memorandum Circular No, 05-12-2014.
All unlimited types of services, which includes Internet or broadband promos, should not be interrupted during the periods of December 23 to 26, 30 to 31 and January 1 to 2.
According to Ramon Isberto, spokesperson for Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co (PLDT), which includes Smart Telecom and Sun Cellular companies, that their network is prepared for the vast amount of SMS and voice calls. He also said that this year traffic has been changing and distributed to different platforms.
In a similar way, Yoly Cristanto, senior vice president for corporate communication for Globe, said that they are ready and well-prepared to cope up with the surge in network traffic. Also, Globe recently completed a country wide rollout of HSPA+ technology, which provides customers a faster and more reliable wireless Internet connectivity.
