A woman controls an F-35 Fighter Jet Sim using only her mind!

Something’s amazing is happening at DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency). A paralyzed woman was successfully able use her thoughts to control an F-35 and a single-engine Cessna in a flight simulator.

Jan Scheuermann, who has suffered from quadriplegia since 2003 due to spinocerebellar degeneration.

Jan Sheuermann, 55 years-old, is quadriplegic, unable to move her arms and legs due to a neurodegenerative disease.

In 2012, Sheuermann decided to agree with the surgeons of Human Engineering Research
Laboratories to implant electrodes on her brain to control a robotic arm.

“Scheuermann, who became paralyzed years ago from a rare genetic disease, has tolerated the two pea-sized implants on her left motor cortex “very well,” said Arati Prabhakar, director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency

After two years, the scientist changed the game, instead of connecting Sheuermann’s brain to a robotic arm; they connected her to a flight stimulator. She would use the same neural connections to pilot an F-35 Joint Strike Fighter which is military’s next generation attack jet.

"Jan decided that she wanted to try flying a Joint Strike Fighter simulator," Prabhakar said, prompting laughter from the crowd at the New America Foundation's Future of War forum. "So Jan got to fly in the simulator."

The flight was a success, potentially paving the way for the creation of technologies that will
change the lives of other quadriplegics.

Unlike other pilots who use simulator technology for training, Scheuermann wasn’t using or even thinking about controlling the plane with a joystick. She is controlling the plane with "nothing but her thoughts,"

“In doing this work, we've also opened this door. We can now see a future where we can free the brain from the limitations of the human body and I think we can all imagine amazing good things and amazing potential bad things that are on the other side of that door.” said Prabhakar

The experiment is an exciting new for future plans especially for medicine, particularly for those with quadriplegia.
