The rock surface is coated with a special paint that absorbs the light of the sun and uses it to glow at night. Roosegaarde said that the technique that he use to light up the road is "more gentle to the eye and surrounding nature that other lighting infrastructure, and creates a connection with cultural history".

They also utilized a solar panel to generate power to light the coated rocks. This was developed by Heijmans, a infrastructure firm. They alos added LED on the side of the curves to give extra light. This means that even the rocks were not fully charged on a cloudy day, the path will still light to it full brightness.

"It's a new total system that is self-sufficient and practical, and just incredibly poetic," said Roosegaarde.

On their future plans is to build an safety road warnings to alert the drivers when there is a icy road.
