These divers had the shock of their lives as they encounter a massive sea creature!
Divers encountered a gigantic sea creature which was so big, it made them seemed like tiny beings floating in the ocean.
The video was posted YouTube by photographer Miguel Pereira. The spectacular footage shows the divers being dwarfed by a floating giant just off the coast of Santa Maria Island in Portugal as they surrounded the docile behemoth to document their unforgettable experience.
He captioned the video saying, “The slow-moving fish and clear water allow for some spectacular close-ups of this amazing animal.”
Ocean sunfish are also known as Mola mola. They are the largest known bony fish in the world and can weigh up to 2,268 kilograms (5,000 pounds) as they roam tropical and temperate oceans feeding on sea jellies, small fish and plankton which are then minced by claw-like plates in their throat because they don’t have teeth.
They can measure nearly 15 feet vertically, and reach lengths of about 12 feet. Despite their intimidating size, sunfish are actually kind giants and they are harmless to humans.
Their truncated bodies are somewhat circular and feature a back fin that folds into itself as it grows, and serves as a rudder called a clavus. Their mouths never fully close, adding to their bizarre appearance.
A single female sunfish can produce up to 300 million eggs per brood, this made them firmly part of the Guinness Book of World Records. Their babies will already quite look like their adult counterparts upon hatching!
An encounter with a giant sunfish a rare event because they usually wander pelagic zones far from established dive sites.
It was a good idea that the divers restrained their urge to touch the fish. Not only because it is considered as a wildlife harassment, but also the scale-less fish are known to be swarmed by over 40 different parasites. In fact, some of their parasites even have parasites of their own!
