Man's body got infected with tapeworms after eating contaminated Sashimi

Sashimi is a Japanese delicacy consisting of very fresh raw meat or fish sliced into thin pieces. However, did you know that since sashimi is a raw food, a contaminated one can cause food-borne illness because of bacteria and parasites?

An example of such illness is Diphyllobothriasis, which is the disease wherein an infection within the intestines occurs when the tapeworm Diphyllobothrium latum is consumed.

Common fish such as trout, salmon, pike, and sea bass harbor this parasitic larvae in their muscles.

One Chinese man found out in the worst possible way about this when he went to the doctor complaining of stomach ache and itchy skin. After several tests, they found out that his entire body had been infected with tapeworm after eating too much sashimi. In the video below, you can see the scans done all over his body and the clearly visible tapeworms infecting his bloodstream. He was eventually treated at the Guangzhou No. 8 People's Hospital in Guangdong Province, in eastern China.

Incidentally, a certain Dr. Yin from the same hospital said that that eating uncooked food contaminated with tapeworms' eggs could eventually cause cysticercosis, which is a type of life-threatening infection once it reaches the brain. Doctors also believe that the increase in these incidences is due to the growing popularity of the raw delicacy.
