Priest says Trust God not Fengshui for 2015

“Welcome the New Year by praying to God, stop doing feng shui and other New Year superstitious practices,” stressed Fr. Michell Joe B. Zerrudo, who is the Diocese of Cubao’s exorcist, emphasizing that such superstitious practices to welcome the New Year actually does more harm than good.

Catholics publicly displays practice of feng shui, gather “round fruits” or wear polka dots, put coins inside pockets, etc. But why practice feng shui when you can directly ask God for blessings and graces for the New Year?, as brought up the priest recently, he wish to remind the faithful to depend on God alone for everything.

‘Prince of the power of the air’


Fr. Zerrudo wants to remind Christians about the warnings raised by St. Paul to the Ephesians about Satan whom the apostle called the “prince of the power of air”. Feng shui claims to control the power of nature in order to bring balance and harmony, to give a person a successful life.

“St. Paul spoke of the principalities of the air and the water in order to warn us of demonic spirits living and influencing nature. That is why harnessing the elements of nature to one’s advantage means attempting to influence these principalities and powers of the air and water to work for our advantage,” he continued. Zerrudo added that feng shui and other superstitious practices for “good luck” opens you to the attacks of the devil and is a direct offense against the first commandment (Exodus 20:3, “You shall have no other gods before Me”).

The attempt to harness the elements of nature to favor the one who practices is an occult, according to Zerrudo. He noted how a lot of Catholics publicly promote the practice of feng shui and other superstitions to welcome the New Year.


Against Church Teachings

If one is hardworking, has perseverance and prayer then there is no need to control the elements of nature through feng shui. If hard work can help people achieve success in life then there is no need for charms and amulets. “Having faith in God and practicing feng shui contradicts each other,” the priest explained.

Fr.Zerrudo, who is also the diocese’s Minister for Catechism, reminded Catholics that the official teaching of the Church is against the practice of feng shui and other similar superstitious practices.

The Catechism says: “All practices of magic or sorcery, by one who attempts to tame occult powers, so as to place them at one’s service and have a supernatural power over them – even if this were for the sake of restoring their health – are gravely contrary to the virtue of religion (CCC, 2117).”

The Vatican’s Pontifical Council for Culture and Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue jointly released in 2003 the document “Jesus Christ, the Bearer of the Water of Life: A Christian Reflection on the New Age”. It offered to “explain how the New Age movement differs from the Christian faith.” The document was published during the pontificate of St. John Paul II.
