A Homeless Old Man Begs Daily And Gives It All Away To Orphanages And Churches
Meet 99 years old Dobri Dobrev, also known as Grandpa Dobri or Elder Dobri, who has been called as a “saint” and a “divine stranger” by residents of Sofia, Bulgaria.
He was born on July, 20, 1914 in Baylovo. He was raised by his mother because his father died in World War I. Dobrev lost most of his hearing during World War II, according to Yahoo News Canada.
Dobrev now lives at “St. Cyril and Methodius” in Baylovo and does not live on the money he gets. He decided to live a life for charity around the year of 2000.
Despite his old age and lose of hearing, he managed to walk several kilometers everyday to beg for money in front of the Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky in Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital. He donates the money to charities, orphanages, churches and monasteries. Dobrev doesn't call what he does as begging thus he calls what people give him, “handouts”
Recently he donated all the 40,000 euros he has collected for the restoration of Bulgarian monasteries and churches and the utility bills of orphanages. He was also the biggest financial contributor of the “Alexander Nevski” cathedral.
He was living entirely off his monthly state pension which is 80 euros and only through the kindness of others who sometimes give him food.
Over the years, Dobrev has separated himself from all the materialistic aspects of life and just focus on the spiritual and helping others. He even kisses the hands of those who give because he believe in the kindness of people.
Many people have called him “The saint of Baylovo”. He is turning 100 soon and still continues with his cause.
