A bear who casually strolls around like a human
This video shows an Asiatic black bear casually strolling around his rescue center and taking in the sights.
At first glance, it looks like a human walking around in a bear costume, but rest assured it’s the real deal. An Asiatic black bear, a rescued bear in Laos, really does walk around its enclosure like a human.
“Everyone finds this very amusing, even me,” wrote Eliza Jinata, a wildlife veterinarian who posted the video. “I laughed when I first saw him walking like that and still smile whenever I see him walk like that in his big open enclosure.”
What isn’t as humorous is what this bear has gone through, and what Jinata suspects as the reason the bear walks like a human.
This might be true, but Asiatic black bears are said to be the most bipedal of all bears and have been known to walk upright for more than a quarter mile. What is certain, though, is the inhumane treatment these bears face.
Sadly, more than 10,000 bears are kept on bile farms in China and 2,000 in Vietnam, according to Animals Asia. They are milked regularly for their bile, which is used in traditional medicine.
