Doctors transplanted a Man’s hand to his leg to save it

Xiao Wei who works in a factory in China accidentally cut off his hand in an operating machine.

After the accident, Wei tried to look for hospitals near the factory, but they told him they didn’t have the ability to save his hand.

While looking for doctors who can help him, he put his arm on a plastic bag and placed it in a cooler to preserve his arm.

Dr. Tang Juyu, a tissue and wound repair specialist, attached Wei’s hand on his ankle to keep it alive.

After hours of searching, Wei finally found a tissue and wound repair specialist Dr. Tang Juyu.

Dr. Juyu knew that Wei’s hand is not yet ready to be attached back on his arm so he and his team

perform an immediate surgery to help Wei.

To keep the hand alive, they stitched it to Wei’s left ankle in order to give it a strong and consistent blood supply from arteries in the leg. Until Wei’s arms id healed and ready enough to sustain the reattachment.

Miraculous Surgery

The surgery of the attachment was successful and Wei has been discharged from the hospital.

"His injury was severe. Besides ripping injuries, his arm was also flattened,” said Wei’s doctors. "We had to clear and treat his injuries before taking on the hand reattachment surgery."

According to Wei, when he woke up from the surgery and saw his hand attached to his leg he was so surprised and think it was “unbelievable” and “weird”.

He said that he couldn’t feel anything in his hand because Dr. Tang didn’t connect any nerves. He said that his hand felt warm, and his leg has felt no difference but according to him it was heavier that usual.

After a month of healing, Wei is now ready for another surgery, the attachment.

According to Dr. Tang, this stage is the most challenging part, but everything went smoothly.

Wei recovered and had no any complications. He was discharged and was resting at home.

Dr. Tang had a similar case back on 2004 when he grafted a hand onto a patient’s belly. And the operation was a success.
