22-year-old woman allegedly got HIV from sharing manicure tools

HIV/Aids are one of the most alarming diseases now a day that it has still no cure. It can be transmitted sexually, through breast milk, blood and other bodily fluids. But did you know that sharing manicure tools can also be a way in were you can be infected?

20- year-old woman got infected with HIV from manicure tools

A 22-year-old Brazilian woman was infected and tested positive with HIV. This woman first discovered this in a blood donation program where she was one of the volunteers

She denied of getting it sexually or needle sharing, so they decided to have her mom take a test which turned out negative.

Puzzled where she could get HIV, she remembered 10 years ago that she was sharing manicure equipments with her older cousin. At that time, her cousin was unaware of her infection. But later, her cousin was tested HIV positive.

After analyzing samples from the woman and her cousin, researchers found that the viral genetic material in both women was highly related, indicating the possibility that HIV was transmitted by the manicure instruments.

Experts were baffled by the discovery, noting that there has been no previous speculation that this scenario could transmit the virus.

AIDS Research and Human Retroviruses documented in a journal this first of its kind case.

While this newly discovered method of transmission has doctors astound, they maintain that this shouldn’t cause people to be afraid, seeing as how it is such an incredibly rare incidence.

According to Dr. Brian Foley of HIV Sequence Database at Los Alamos National Laboratory, this first of its kind case should not make people scared of contact with a person who has HIV, as the risk of infection is very low.

HIV is not transmitted by casual contact, such as sharing eating utensils, or drinking from the same water glass,

said Dr, Foley.

This transmission of HIV by shared manicure equipment is a very rare event that should serve not to make people fear HIV or contact with HIV-infected people. However, the case could promote caution around sharing items which may contain blood,

he added.

Sharing any utensils with possible blood to blood contact, such as needles used for drugs, tattoos or acupuncture can result in transmission of viruses such as Hepatitis C and HIV.

In addition, there are other common viruses and bacteria that can also be spread by sharing equipment without proper disinfection between users,

Dr. Foley explained.

We don't need to throw our manicure kit. This is just a reminder to be careful in whatever things we use or share. Sterilize manicure tools before using it or before someone uses them on you. Prevention is better than cure.
