Filipino dramas have gained a strong foothold in Vietnam. With Filipino's good looking and talented actors and actresses, Pinoy dramas have became an alternative to Korean and Chinese ones.
Early in 2010, local viewers knew only a little about the country's dramas. However, three years later, over 30 Filipino films have been broadcaster on local television.
SNTV and Today TV are the channels which features Filipino dramas the most. They broadcast Filipino dramas at 5pm and also in the during peak hours in the evening.
Other local channels in Vietnam have also tried to experiment with Filipino dramas to determine the viewers responses.
"Beauty Queen", "My Girl", "She-Wolf: The last sentinel", "Dyesebel" (the Mermaid), "Mari Mar", and "The Good Daughter" are only some of the local movies which have won over local Vietnam viewers.
Marian Rivera and Max Collins also appears regularly on SNTV and Today TV where they ask in both English and Vietnamese for people to watch their films. This only shows that Filipino filmmakers are creating an effort to get inside the Vietnamese film market.
Most of the Filipino dramas appeals to housewives and the elderly. While with the help of the actors'
and actresses good acting skills and good looks, the local Vietnamese youth are also drawn to Filipino dramas.
According to Bich Lien, a film importer and producer, Thai and Filipino dramas suits the tastes and culture of Vietnamese better compared to films from other ASEAN countries. Also, Filipino drama episodes costs less than Thai and Chinese episodes.
"Filipino films aren't necessarily good, but since they are inundated with Korean and Chinese dramas, local viewers are understandably drawn to such an 'exotic dish'," said scriptwriter Chau Tho.
