Find out how this grandpa SAVED 400 people from committing suicide!
For five decades, Don Ritchie has lived across the street from a cliff called The Gap in Sydney Harbor. The view is truly quite beautiful, but despite its scenic beauty, The Gap is sadly popularly known in Australia for a place where many commit suicide.
Fortunately, the “Australian Angel”, Don Ritchie just lives across the street for already five decades. And for all those years, he is known to be saving lives of the people who attempted to commit suicide there. Don Ritchie has prevented over 400 people from ending their lives.
Though he doesn’t have training in suicide prevention, or a police to assist him, this grandfather have done it by just offering a smile and an inquiry.
Wondering how does he able to change people’s mind? Simple. He gives them warm smile and invites them to his home.
Don Ritchie asks those who feel the most alone, “Why don’t you come and have a cup of tea?”
After that he invites them to his house where his wife will prepare them a meal. And every morning Don inspects the cliff to look for those lost souls who just need the smallest amount of kindness.
According to CBS, Don Ritchie said that you can’t just sit there and watch them do it. You go to try and save them and it’s pretty simple. However, Don Ritchie was not able to save them all. He tried to talk to Dianne Gaddin’s daughter to not commit suicide but he was unable to. Still, Gaddin feels comforted to know that he was there.
“He’s an angel,” Gaddin says. “Most people would be too afraid to do anything and would probably sooner turn away and run away. But he had the courage and the charisma and the care and the magnetism to reach people who were coming to the end of their tether.”
