2014’s Most Popular Password, and it’s not getting any better

Experts recommend using a password of eight characters or more, made up of lower- and upper-case letters, numbers and special characters.

2014 was something of a poster year for the importance of good security online.

According to SplashData, the passwords evaluated for the 2014
list were mostly held by users in North America and Western Europe.

Password-management company SplashData released its annual list of the worst passwords of the last year. SplashData took a look at the 3.3 million passwords that got leaked last year, analyzing the most commonly leaked and least secure passwords.

SplashData finds "123456" and "password" have remained the top two most popular passwords since they started tracking in 2011. The list was compiled from more than 3.3 million passwords leaked during the year.

Other passwords in the top 10 include “qwerty,” “dragon,” and “football."

Morgan Slain, CEO of SplashData said “Passwords based on simple patterns on your keyboard remain popular despite how weak they are”. “Any password using numbers alone should be avoided, especially sequences. As more websites require stronger passwords or combinations of letters and numbers, longer keyboard patterns are becoming common passwords, and they are still not secure.”

SplashData recommends using passwords that are eight digits or longer, with different types of characters, using different username and password combinations for different websites.
