That’s because he is using the invisible abacus technique where he uses his hands to imagine and perform calculations on beads of an imaginary abacus.

The word Abacus is derived from the Greek word 'abax', meaning 'calculating board' or 'calculating table'. The first Chinese Abacus was invented around 500 B.C. The abacus, as we know it today, was used in China around 1300 A.D.

It is a device, usually of wood (plastic, in recent times), having a frame that holds rods with freely-sliding beads mounted on them. Its a mechanical aid used for counting large numbers; they are not calculators in the sense we use the word today.

The person operating the abacus performs calculations in their head and uses the abacus as a physical aid to keep track of the sums, the carrys, etc.
