11 people who have contact with the infected nurse shows MERS-Cov symptoms
According to the DOH, 11 people who had close contact with positive Middle East Respiratory Syndrome-Corona Virus (MERS-COV) Filipina nurse show symptoms of the disease.
The 11 patients were among the 56 people who were listed to have close contact with the nurse.
The DOH is still tracing all those who have had contact with the nurse. Specifically, they are tracing more than 200 people who were on the same Saudia flight with the nurse who tested positive for the virus.
Malacañang is now urging the public to follow the Health Department's advisories on the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus or MERS-CoV.
“All 56 persons yielded a negative result in the first round of tests using nose and throat swab samples. However, the 11 symptomatic patients will undergo another round of tests using sputum and rectal swab samples," DOH Acting Secretary Janette L. Garin stated in a press orientation held at the DOH media relations unit (MRU) in Tayuman, Manila.
According to DOH Secretary Janette Garin, MERS-Cov has a mortality of 30%, human-to-human transmission is not that easy so there’s no reason to panic.
Garin said they cannot immediately consider the 11 people to be “MERS-CoV free” due to pending additional tests required to be done aside from the initial test conducted, which are nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal.
She said that Mers-CoV usually thrives in the lungs.” It is deep down there. So to make sure that it will yield negative, we need to get phlegm at rectal swab which we currently conduct at them,” Garin said.
The Filipina was admitted to the Evangelista Medical Specialty Center in San Pedro, Laguna on February 2 after complaining of fever, cough and difficulty breathing.
After the Filipina nurse had been tested positive for the disease, she has been confined at the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Muntinlupa.
On the test conducted, it was learned that the Filipino nurse was four to five weeks pregnant.
“She is under stable condition right now and the medical staffs are taking enough care in ensuring her safety and her baby as well,” she said.
“We call on the remaining passengers to contact the DOH Hotline (02) 711-1001 and (02) 711-1002and undergo testing,” the Health Chief added.
MERS-CoV symptom is usually flu-like where patient may seen suffering from difficulty of breathing, fever and cough.
Other symptoms are vomiting, diarrhea and nausea.
So the best way to fight this disease is to have a strong immune system.
