Valeri Spiridonov, the Russian man who suffers with a rare genetic disorder called Werdnig-Hoffman muscle-wasting disease, has volunteered to be the first to try the procedure. But according to the at least one expert, this man might be facing something that’s “worse than death.”

Spiridonov said that his disease is getting worse every year and usually the people with the same disease that he has don’t live longer than 20 years. It would be a chance for him to prolong his life and help scientific research in the process.

A renowned Italian surgeon, Sergio Canavero, is set to conduct the operation. He sees the procedure as comparable to space exploration. According to him, the operation is set to last up to 36 hours and will cost over $11 million.

The patient’s brain will be cooled down to 10-15 degrees Celsius (50-60 Fahrenheit) during the procedure to prolong the survival time of the cells without oxygen.

The body will be taken from a brain-dead but healthy donor. Special biological glue will be used to connect the head to the new body. The patient will be put into coma for 3-4 weeks after the operation. This is to prevent the patient from any movement. He will also be given immunosuppressants with the aim of preventing the body rejecting its new head.

Several medics are against the procedure. A California doctor said that it is “too overwhelming a project to succeed”. While others said it is “too outlandish to consider” and simply “crazy”.

Canavero called the procedure “Heaven” which is an acronym for head anastomosis venture which involves the surgical connecting of two parts. Watch the video here:
