According to the doctors, Brooke had the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) and feared the child could develop brain damage or liver failure so put her on an antiviral drip for five days.

Herpes simplex type 1, which is transmitted through oral secretions or sores on the skin, can be spread through kissing or sharing objects such as toothbrushes or eating utensils. After doctors diagnosed the newborn with HSV-1, they put her on an antiviral drip for five days.

This prompt action might have saved Brooke from more serious consequences.

Claire said that a friend who visited in the weeks following Brooke's birth carried the disease. She said the visitor didn’t appear to have a cold sore at the time she held Brooke.

According to the World Health Organization, HSV-1 can be transmitted through saliva and surfaces in or around the mouth as well.

Claire has now warned parents against letting people kiss their babies in a Facebook post, explaining how the visitor she allowed to hold her baby didn’t have any visible signs of the virus.

She said the situation was traumatic and terrifying, and more people need to be aware of the risk.

"She was VERY lucky, all her tests came back clear. The moral of the story is DO NOT let anyone kiss your newborn's mouth, even if they don't look like they have a cold sore," said Claire.
