Good News? Is PHL will become a Wi-Fi country soon?

Philippines will now join the trend of Asian countries that has 24/7 free Wi-Fi access in some assigned public areas in the country.

The project will be able to serve 105,500 users with an average of 256 kbps each.

The Department of Science and Technology – Information and Communication Technology Office (DOST-ICTO), will implement the said big project across the entire country, a huge venture that the government said it will start in July 2015.

“According to IT experts, this project will be able to help people in provinces with education, especially since they will have access to government databases. It also offers a cheaper alternative to long-distance phone calls,” said GMA network

This huge project aims to provide free Wi-Fi access in selected public places like parks, public schools, state universities, public libraries, government hospitals, train stations, airports, municipal halls, and national government offices.

Although the project will be available to the Filipino public in the next few months, the DOST noted that there will be limitations with the free Wi-Fi access.

The project will be able to serve 105,500 users with an average of 256 kbps each, the lowest prevailing speed requirement for “Broadband” Service.

The DOST also noted that there will be certain limitations with regards to access in each Wi-Fi zone and the national government are still polishing the policies with regards to the Wi-Fi access registration.
