Man tries to marry a COBRA believing it was the reincarnation of a beautiful woman
In a remote village of Badawapur in the Uttar Pradesh state in northern India, thousands of superstitious Hindus threatened to riot when local police stopped an unlikely marital union between a man and a serpent.
Sandeep Patel, 27, was convinced that the cobra had been a beautiful woman in a previous life and had now fallen in love with him. He also claimed to possess a mystical power that enables him to shift into a snake at night when in a deep trance.
Sandeep’s family has announced to the village that the cobra promised to marry him on Easter Sunday to the extent that they went of handing out flyers so everyone will know.
Between 12,000 – 15,000 people flocked to witness the ceremony. Even the Hindu priest carrying out the marriage told them that Sandeep had exhibited traits of a snake since childhood.
“Sandeep walks, drinks and flickers his tongue just like a snake.” He added.
Sandeep arrived wearing trousers and a white vest and was soon garlanded with colourful flowers by the crowd.
The armed police burst into the temple after being tipped off about the bizarre wedding.
The priest ran away because of panic and was nowhere to be found. While both Sandeep and his father Dayashankar were arrested for breaching the peace.
It took more than six hours to convince everyone who were hoping to witness a show that there is no more wedding and they need to return home. Authorities had to ask for reinforcement to disperse the angry crowd.
Sandeep and his father were detained by the authorities before they were released. The chief of local police said that Sandeep was mentally-challenged and his previous records shows that he was previously treated in a psychiatric institution.
