Donald Gould, a 51-year-old former Marine who happens to be homeless for the past seven years already is an internet star at the moment!
A Florida homeless man who recently won national fame after a video of his amazing piano playing went viral has been given the opportunity to turn his life around.
Fans of Sarasota's Donald Gould created a GoFundMe page that raised $40,000 in just eight days with the goal of helping the trained musician get back on his feet.
Gould's touching musicianship already helped him reconnect with his long lost son and on Thursday the 51-year-old revealed he's entering a rehab program where he can start to get his life back in order following years of substance abuse that began with the death of his wife in 1998.
A lot of people were attracted when a video of him was uploaded on YouTube. He surprised everyone with his fantastic musical skills when he sat down and laid his hands on a public piano!
While playing a piano, Aroar Natasha was captivated by the poor man’s excellent playing and so she took the footage and shared it online. Last June 30, the video has exceeded 10 million views on YouTube! I was also amazed by his talent!
Natasha talked to the man and she found out about his sad back story. According to him, he was an ex-Marine but also a former music teacher. In 1998, his wife passed away. Sadly, he was addicted to drugs which was a reason why his son was taken away from him.
Unfortunately, Donald lives in the streets and plays on these public pianos in exchange of tips. And sometimes, he also teaches free piano lessons to kids who see him play.
A few days later, his video went viral and became popular online. According to Donald, he was hoping that this will help him find his now 18-year-old son.
Luckily, a lot of people were amazed by his talent, so a local restaurant in Florida has expressed willingness to give him a regular gig on their bar! Also, a GoFundMe account was created to help him. The campaign has raised more than $12,000 through the donations of 536 people in a single day.
“Donald needs a second chance at life. He is extremely musically talented and can play or teach any instrument that comes his way! Let’s help make this man’s dream come true. He’s a very sweet soul!” said the campaign initiators about him.
Thanks to all the media coverage he may get to play at a piano bar at a place called the Surf Shack.
Gould told WWSB that he may have never become a music teacher but he teaches kids to play every time they sit at the piano.
'I play the 'Heart and Soul' bass, I say 'just hit the white keys, you can't screw up'... It doesn't matter how they play, if they play crappy or good, I always clap for them,' He says. 'I'm a nurturer, I'm a teacher.
