A new premium type of buses goes operational in the Philippines
In the Philippines, they have implemented the double-decker. Who will you take to ride this new bus?
A double-decker bus is a bus with two decks. They are used for mass transpotation mostly in United Kingdom, Europe and in Asia. In London, you will find the most popular red double-decker bus and their national symbol as well. Double-decker buses are common in United Kingdom. In 1941, Miss Phyllis Thompson was the first woman to be licensed driver of a double-decker bus in England. She was employed by Messrs bus company. In 2015, London plans to add five electric double-decker buses. These are the first all-electric buses that was manufactured by BYD company in China.
In the Philippines, Land Transportation Franchise and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) launched the first point-to-point double-decker buses. These will serves commuters traveling from SM City North EDSA in Quezon City up to Glorietta 5 in Makati City which leaves Quezon City at 8:00 am. This air-conditioned double-decker buses provides the commuters premium services. These are CCTV cameras, free Wi-Fi access, lavatory and a VIP lounge that can accommodate 6 passengers found on the second deck.
They say that this premium buses can save 20 to 30 minutes of travel time compared to regular air-conditioned buses that travels in EDSA. However, these premium buses is 20 pesos more expensive than the regular air-con buses. It costs 55 pesos. However, some of the commuters don’t mind paying extra for the conveniences and additional services.
According to LTFRB, this is currently on dry-run and they are using a prototype buses from Froehlich tours. In the future, the new buses can accommodate more passengers on the lower deck and can accommodate passengers with disabilities, elderlies and a wheel chair section.
For this program to continue, the Department of Transportation and Communications has an on-going selection process for operators to invest and to drive point-to-point buses. They are also planning to expand their operation by adding more routes. This is to give better services for commuters.
