WHO warns fatal Zika virus will spread across the Americas including USA
If you heard that there is a new virus that is moving around the world? Should you be alarmed?
Zika virus is a mosquito-borne illness that can infect the babies with severe brain damage and underdeveloped head during pregnancy. Also, this virus can cause paralysis in adults and babies as well. This can be transmitted from a bite of an infected mosquito. However, there is a recent studies that this can be sexually transmitted as well. The evidence is very slim but medical experts said that this is disturbing enough that they should informed not just pregnant woman but all travelers as well. The Aedes mosquito which can be found in all countries in the North and South America, carries this deadly virus.
This news went viral on the net after World Health Organization said that this virus has spread to 21 countries and territories all over Americas except Canada and Chile.
Patients that were affected with this virus can experience fever, rashes, joint pains and conjunctivitis (red eyes). Woman, who are in their pregnant, is warned not to travel in those countries, especially in Brazil, which has the highest number of babies born with microcephaly.
Microcephaly is a condition where the baby has a smaller heads compared to average babies. There are 3,500 microcephaly cases that was reported in Brazil from October 2015 to January 2016. There were cases of these that was tracked to Hawaii, where an infected woman gave birth to a baby with microcephaly.
At the moment, there are no known drugs to treat Zika and there are no available vaccines as well. Scientist blames on climate change which made a big part in spreading the virus.
In Asia, Taiwan confirms the first case of Zika virus. Where a 24-year old man was travelling from Northern Thailand to Taipei. After arriving at the Taoyuan International Airport, the man was detected with fever during screening. The Taiwan CDC runs some test and confirmed that he was infected with Zika virus.
Philippines was hit by Dengue and the Department of Health should be aware this new threat that can affect millions of Filipinos around the country.
