You think you've been in a bad traffic jam? You haven't been in a bad traffic jam.
You'll never complain about traffic again once you have seen footage of a major traffic jam in China that takes 50 lanes of motorway. When half of the Chinese population hits the road at the same time, an endless traffic jam seems all locked up.
A stunning 750 million people, or half of China’s total population, went on holiday during Golden Week, the seven-day holiday marking the country’s National Day on October 1.
The mess comes up when they started too returned home. People returning home after the national holiday were forced to wait for hours as more and more cars joined the lane, stretching out as far as the eye could see.
The traffic jam was caused by a new checkpoint at the other side of the toll, which reduced the width of the road from 50 to less than 20 lanes. Motorists had little choice but to top off gas tanks or go for a stroll while the waited.
The shocking scenes were one of the many traffic nightmares across the country. Motorways in other major cities, such as Shanghai and Nanjing, also saw serious traffic jam.
The whole of North China, including Beijing, was on alert because of the volume of people on the move. China’s National Tourism Administration confirmed that this year’s Golden Week tourism figures have shown a year on year 6.1% increase, with record-breaking numbers of travelers on Chinese highways.
But it’s still not as bad as that 2010 traffic jam that lasted 10 days in China.
